I’m not much of a YouTube watcher, so it was just recently that I found out about Antoine Dodson, who got the most YouTube video views of the year in 2010. For those of you who haven’t heard of this guy, first watch the original newscast where he was featured.

He sounds like the Donkey from Shrek! As if this wasn’t hilarious enough, music group, The Gregory Brothers, took this clip and created auto-tune song out of it, which is actually quite catchy.

This song became so popular on iTunes that it even entered the Billboard Hot 100, and caused numerous viral covers. I particularly liked the college marching band covering the song. I enjoyed it so much that I even purchased the track on iTunes. Hey, the proceed of the song was able to get Dodson family out of the hood. The only sad thing is that the sex offender has not been caught just yet.

I kept on seeing their names on the year end lists, and had to look them up. Apparently they are known for the 2008 song, “Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell” where they humorously rap about being confused about the national chain that combines both choices. This track was also voted as one of the best songs on Rolling Stone magazine. The mixtape album is available for free on their website.

Spose - I'm Awesome

In the last couple of years, there have been several “promising” white rappers to surface the music magazines such as Pittsburgh Slim and Asher Roth, though both of them have been stuck at one radio-hit. Add Maine based Spose to the list. His SNL style rap of poking fun at himself (“I talk to myself on the Facebook wall”) has hit many American’s heart, and his now a top 40 hit. It is catchy, and he managed to get a record contract with this single but half a year from now when he does release an album, could he prove himself again?

Flight Of The Conchords - Hurt Feelings

Months after season 2 of New Zeland’s comedic duo, Flight of the COnchords’s hit HBO show wrapped up, they are finally releasing an album with the songs from the show. As usual, the tracks are funny, but compared to the first album, these songs were written in such a short period of time, that they seem to lack a little bit of something. But there are standout tracks, such as “Hurt Feelings” where they rap about their hurtful past such as being called, “you look like a llama” (actually he kinda does). What’s brilliant about this song is that they use toy piano as the key instrument, and that miniscule feel totally fits the lyrics. Flight of the Conchords, you guys are hilarious.

The Lonely Island - I'm On A Boat /ft. T-Pain

I’m a huge fan of The Flight of the Conchords. Some people are comparing The Lonely Island with the Kiwi guys, but the only similarities between those two bands are that they try to write songs that makes people laugh. Flight of the Conchords is way more subtle and clever, whereas Lonely Island is more in your face. That’s not to say that one is better. It’s what you prefer. I like both, and I particularly like this track featuring T-Pain. The Lonely Island consists of Saturday Night Live cast Andy Samberg, and his two friends from junior high school, who are writers for SNL. It’s hilarious how they act so “gangsta” about being on a boat. My favorite line: “But this ain’t Seaworld, this is real as it gets. I’m on a boat, motherf*cker, don’t you ever forget.” I also like how the music video start out.

Flight Of The Conchords - Think About It

I first caught them in the comedy room at Bumbershoot 2005, and fell in love with these guys. I wasn’t the only one, as Sub Pop (Seattle’s underground label, famous for signing Nirvana and Soundgarden) decided to sign them under their label after seeing them at Bumbershoot. Since then, they have managed to get their own show on HBO. Flight of the Conchords consists of two guys from New Zealand. One of them starred in Outback Steakhouse commercial in the US, and the other was in Lord of the Rings. They sing various genre of music from folk songs to hip-hop. If you ever have a chance to see them live, it’s definitely worth seeing them. Also check out their other great hits, Business Time and Hiphopopotamus vs. The Rhymenoceros.
